**National Fire Prevention Week 2024: Importance of Working Smoke Alarms**

As part of National Fire Prevention Week, the Fort Worth Fire Department emphasizes the critical role of working smoke alarms in home safety. Research shows that having a working smoke alarm can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by 50%.

Statistics reveal that roughly 3 out of 5 fire deaths occur in homes lacking either smoke alarms or functioning smoke alarms. To combat this, residents are encouraged to verify that their smoke alarms are properly installed and operational.

Smoke alarms should be placed in the following locations within the home:

- Every level of the house

- Outside each sleeping area

- Inside each bedroom

- If feasible, all smoke alarms should be interconnected so that they sound simultaneously.

Families are encouraged to participate in checking the placement and functionality of smoke alarms, with the goal of being prepared in case of a fire. The Fort Worth Fire Department is providing resources and worksheets to help families engage in this important safety check.

Additionally, residents can request a free smoke alarm and installation by a firefighter from the Fort Worth Fire Department by calling 817-392-6862 or emailing Fire.Safety@FortWorthTexas.gov.

Throughout the week, the Fort Worth Fire Department will share helpful information regarding smoke alarms and fire safety.
