Fort Worth Carnegie Library Opens in 1901
Staff Report / FTWlocal.org
The Fort Worth Carnegie Library, an important historical landmark, was established following efforts initiated by Jennie Scott Scheuber and Mrs. Ida L. Turner in 1892, who formed the Fort Worth Library Association. Initially, men were encouraged to contribute by donating the equivalent of the price of a cigar. Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie significantly supported the cause by donating $50,000.
After experiencing several delays due to financial issues affecting the nation, the library officially opened its doors on October 17, 1901. A recent post from the Fort Worth Public Library features an image of the library from around 1920 and highlights its rich history. The Fort Worth Public Library is associated with The Fort Worth Public Library Foundation and the City of Fort Worth.
