Smoke Alarms Must Support All Family Members

Staff Report / FTWlocal.org

In Fort Worth, the Fort Worth Fire Department emphasizes the importance of ensuring that smoke alarms are suitable for all family members, particularly those with sensory or physical disabilities. This initiative comes during National Fire Prevention Week, advocating for safety measures that cater to individuals who may have difficulties hearing typical alarms.

For individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, conventional alarms may not be effective in alerting them to danger. To address this, special alarms and devices that include bed shakers, strobe lights, and low-frequency alarms are available. Those in need of assistance finding these items are encouraged to reach out to the fire department.

Residents are also invited to register their households with Fort Worth Community Connect. This service allows emergency responders to access critical information about individuals living in the home, such as those with hearing impairments or mobility challenges. By creating a Community Connect profile, residents can ensure that first responders are prepared to provide the necessary support during emergencies.

Furthermore, Fort Worth residents can request a free smoke alarm and installation service from a Fort Worth firefighter by contacting the fire department at 817-392-6862 or via email at Fire.Safety@FortWorthTexas.gov.
